The Cosmological Framework\\
\\
VolumeU presents a complex metaphysical universe where reality operates through multiple dimensions of perception and consciousness. The foundational premise establishes that "on the earth, lines are circles" and when thoughts rotate in the third dimension, they rotate around a line, but in the fourth dimension, they rotate around a movie screen. This rotation of thoughts creates dolls, which serve as intermediary beings between the material and spiritual realms. The same process that creates dolls also causes forgetfulness, suggesting that memory and materialization are inversely related forces in this universe.\\
\\
The nature of storytelling itself becomes central to the cosmology. Because of the nature of forgetfulness, many stories can pass through a single screen simultaneously. Dolls who pass through this screen create movies, but crucially, a story told by a benshi (movie narrator) on the right side of the screen differs fundamentally from one told by a benshi on the left. This creates two sets of dreamers with no means of communication, yet living with identical hallucinations. Telepathy, paradoxically, doesn't connect people to each other but rather represents an allergic reaction to multiple worlds.\\
----
The World of Manchuria and the Central Station\\
\\
The central setting is Manchuria, reimagined as a mystical landscape where Japan has disappeared and been replaced by the "Pure Land." The protagonist lives as a ghost in a plaster hut at the train station in Shinkyo, serving as chief narrator at the Log Cabin Electric Cinema in the northern part of South Shinkyo. This cinema operates as part of the Manchu-Edison Film Corporation, a vast enterprise that extends beyond simple entertainment into the realm of consciousness manipulation and soul processing.\\
\\
At the heart of this world stands the Central Station, which functions as both a transportation hub and a metaphysical nexus. The station contains a planetarium movie theater where "Train Films" are played—movies shot from the windows of Manchurian trains that create an immersive experience for travelers. The building itself is described as having seven vertical levels, from the trash bucket to the ceiling of the planetarium above the movie screen, with different dolls inhabiting each level.\\
\\
The architecture reveals deeper mysteries: behind the planetarium screen lies a shrine containing a model of Japan, while Manchuria and Korea are kept in a building on the rotary at the center of Shinkyo. This building serves as a Pure Land Motion Railroad Temple where Caboose Films are shown in tents modeled after ancient shrines, creating a "tabernacle of previous purity."\\
----
The Shadow Planet and Eclipse Mythology\\
\\
One of the most striking elements of VolumeU's cosmology is the concept of the Shadow Planet. Eclipses are common throughout Manchuria, caused by a shadow planet that comes between the inhabitants and the sun. Remarkably, this shadow planet is revealed to be Manchuria itself, trailing in the sky above. The shadows of these eclipses follow predictable paths that align with existing train lines, creating a transportation system guided by celestial mechanics.\\
\\
The relationship between Tokyo and Manchuria is reciprocal and mystical. When one is in Tokyo, Manchuria appears as a moon in the sky above. Conversely, when one is in Manchuria, Tokyo becomes the moon. During the Transit of Tokyo—an annual event—Manchurians can observe the details of that distant planet-city, seeing parts of the Old City including its trains. The opposing moon can come so close that throwing a shoe upward will land on the street above, in the inverted city overhead.\\
\\
Great Eclipses last several days and are periods of celebration accompanied by increased thoughts in the population. During these events, "the son of the Sun God descends upon the northern part of present-day China from the solar realm," suggesting a divine visitation that occurs through astronomical alignment.\\
----
The Benshi and Telepathic Cinema\\
\\
The movie theater system operates through benshi, or movie narrators, who possess residual telepathic abilities. These abilities, when combined with moving pictures, allow the benshi to create additional pictures and stories inside their audience's minds. The discovery that natural telepathic abilities could be enhanced by cinema represents a technological breakthrough that transforms entertainment into a form of consciousness programming.\\
\\
The theater design reflects this supernatural function. Russian-built theaters include walls that hide the projection of films from the audience, with secret films simultaneously projected on hidden screens. The narrator arrives through a small door in the center of the wall, allowing the audience to see only fragments of the hidden projection. Painted screens in front of movie screens contain tiny paintings representing what lies behind, while the outside screen is framed by railroad tracks painted to look like teeth, with little stories written in pencil on almost every tooth.\\
\\
The benshi themselves exist in a liminal state between human and puppet. They are described as being made from trees sunk in water for centuries, and when inherited, they stick to their operators. The only way to remove them is to boil both puppet and puppeteer together, and both are destined for the flames of the boiler after any performance. Despite this gruesome fate, there are many of them, and they are reusable.\\
----
Blood Research and Soul Processing\\
\\
Central to the Manchu Edison franchise is blood collection and testing, which takes place at all theaters and trains. The star maps of the miniature universe presented by the benshi are printed annually on postage stamps that serve as legal tender throughout the nation. These maps show patterns that can be found in the blood of every person within Manchuria, and tracing these patterns forms an important part of Manchu Edison's blood extraction research mission.\\
\\
The relationship between blood, thought, and cosmic patterns suggests a universe where individual consciousness is connected to larger astronomical cycles. The mechanical blood collection represents an attempt to map and harness these connections, turning the population into both audience and raw material for the cinema-industrial complex.\\
----
The Puppet Masters and Studio Families\\
\\
The benshi must undergo a traumatic separation from their biological origins to serve their function. To serve their studio parents, they must cut contact with their real parents and are isolated in movie theaters. They depart from the womb when the movie begins, meeting their Studio Mother and Father in place of their biological family. After this encounter, the studio parents provide protection, creating an artificial family structure that replaces natural kinship with industrial loyalty.\\
\\
The puppet masters carry various tools and containers. They wear sunboxes on their heads containing the entire universe, with Amaterasu living inside. They carry little black boxes on their backs storing scripts—described as "wombs for scripts of the future"—and shoulder boxes with small chairs where dolls rest during performances. Some wear straw hats even in their mothers' wombs, suggesting their predestination for this role.\\
----
Purification Rituals and Movie Cleansing\\
\\
The projector serves as more than an entertainment device; it functions as a purification mechanism. When lit, the planetarium projector makes the brightest stars visible on the ceiling, and the projector fire "fixes" the dolls, controlling them through cones of light. The light burns bad thoughts, and spirits are cleansed with simple stories according to a strict film schedule.\\
\\
The purification process extends to the railroad tracks, which are cleaned regularly. Special screens are placed on railroad flat cars, and the dolls feed on members of the audience. Sometimes, dolls who have been told stories return as babies, creating living souls through this cyclical process of consumption and rebirth.\\
\\
Two types of steam purification exist: purification of good (which includes watching movies) and purification of evil (which includes burning logs). Once yearly, a great Purification Eclipse occurs where the sins of all Manchuria are destroyed in an artificial volcano eruption, removing evil and misfortune from the nation through collective ritual cleansing.\\
----
Transportation and Metaphysical Geography\\
\\
Metropolitan Manchuria operates as a subway system where passengers sleep in mining depots lined with marble from Birobidzhan. The Great Railroad stretches nine thousand miles in a circular track that never exits the country, creating a closed transportation system that reinforces the isolation and self-containment of this mystical realm.\\
\\
The mobile nature of the railroad system reflects the dynamic relationship between terrestrial and celestial mechanics. Many train tracks in Manchuria can be repositioned with a few days' work, allowing routes to take new directions as needed. This flexibility serves the tracking of eclipse shadows and astronomical events, ensuring that the transportation infrastructure remains aligned with cosmic forces.\\
\\
The protagonist's origin story as cargo reveals the transformation process: arriving on a train of flatbed cars loaded with logs, they were logs themselves—carved faces, dolls, gifts for the children of Manchuria. After crossing the Amur River and being covered with volcanic dust, they were taken to a factory where experts carved them to create scale models of themselves from their own original material.\\
----
The Mirror System and Urban Telepathy\\
\\
The cities operate through an elaborate mirror system that extends the cinema's reach into daily life. Movies can be sent through mirrors from the Central Station Planetarium to individual mirrors throughout the city. Screen mirrors collect and reflect the thoughts of audiences and the movements of dolls, mixing thoughts and images before reflecting them out to the city via the mirror network.\\
\\
Maps are scratched on street corner mirrors, and convex mirrors on Shinkyo streets disperse the polarized light of lunar Tokyo, illuminating local streets with marks from the scratched maps. These marks are burned onto starlight-sensitive asphalt, creating a readable urban text. The lost can read these street burns or use radio verses to find the name and time of their location.\\
\\
At night, through residual telepathy, individuals remember circumstances of their last moments during visits to other brains. Dreams pass from brain to brain across city streets, all originating from the Central Station via street mirrors. This creates a network where individual consciousness becomes part of a larger telepathic web, with the cinema serving as the central broadcasting station for shared dreams and experiences.\\
----
Sister Jesus and Astronomical Navigation\\
\\
Among the key figures is Sister Jesus, an astronomer whose observations control the rising and setting of the sun. In her observatory, she built a terminal that planets use when changing orbit, suggesting direct interaction between human technology and celestial mechanics. She carries a bronze mirror with a map scratched on its surface—a telescope mirror that doubles as a navigational tool.\\
\\
The map shows the true method for finding Jerusalem and instructions for building the Steam Buddha. Sister Jesus guides planets through planetarium skies, directing the Venus train across the surface of the sun and assembling puzzle places into maps that become new places in Manchuria. She searches through the light of a million worlds where dolls live, hanging by a rotating chord that passes through the vanishing point at the center of her body.\\
----
Death, Transformation, and Eternal Return\\
\\
The stories reveal a universe where death and transformation are constantly occurring. Puppet masters are destined for the flames of the boiler after performances, yet they are also reusable. The dolls feed on audience members but sometimes return as babies, creating living souls. This cycle of consumption, death, and rebirth suggests a universe where energy and consciousness are conserved through transformation rather than destroyed.\\
\\
The forgetfulness that drives the entire system ensures that people always return to the theaters despite knowing the stories. The ghosts live in little air bubbles, repeating the same actions over and over again, while the living continue to visit shrines and theaters in an endless cycle of entertainment and spiritual seeking.\\
\\
The text presents a vision of reality where cinema, consciousness, blood, astronomy, and transportation merge into a single system of control and transcendence. The Pure Land becomes a technological paradise where the boundaries between audience and performer, human and puppet, individual and collective consciousness dissolve into a managed mystical experience that perpetuates itself through forgetfulness and eternal return.
