12.25. The Hill of Cancelled Anniversaries
(Location: Overlook G, Above Iitate Border)
Description:
This hill had once been proposed for a memorial—a cenotaph, a plaque, a garden. But the proposal had been withdrawn. Too many versions. Too many conflicting names. Now the summit stood empty, except for twenty-seven stones, arranged in spirals. “A calendar with no dates,” Juna said. Each stone bore a single kanji: wind, water, return, height, and others too faded to name. Judai placed his notebook in the center. “This is where it didn’t happen,” he said. No ceremonies. No speeches. Just silence thick enough to hold history without speaking it aloud. A cancelled memorial becomes its own kind of shrine.

Very Short Story:
They placed their hands on the outer stones. Each was warm, despite the cold wind. Juna stood at the imagined podium and said nothing. Judai took one photo—then deleted it. “Some places don’t need to be seen,” he said. “They need to be unfinished.” The hill accepted the decision.
