13.5. -** ***All the Dolls at Once, or Twice
Description:
There’s a shrine just below the summit, half-swallowed by moss. Inside, it contains only dolls—hundreds, maybe thousands—stacked to the ceiling, staring in every direction. Some are Japanese, some Soviet, others handmade from Martian dust and hope. Juna remembers stories of doll repositories in the countryside—places where forgotten emotions were stored for safe keeping. But this shrine is different. These dolls flicker slightly. Each contains a stored instance of a person once seen but not known: the girl you passed on a subway, the old man in a café, the shadow behind the curtain. “They’re us,” Juna whispers. “But only once. Or twice.” The dolls are waking up. Judai doesn’t take pictures. Not here.

Very Short Story:
They opened the shrine door. Dolls turned toward them in unison. Judai stepped back. Juna stepped forward. “Each one has seen us,” she said. “In another life?” “No. In this one—but briefly.” She touched a porcelain face and felt a subway ride flood her senses: the smell of citrus, a stranger’s gaze. “They keep our unclaimed encounters,” she whispered. One doll blinked. Another smiled. The shrine pulsed like a heart. “Twice is the limit,” Juna said. “After that, they speak.” Judai nodded. He felt his name in a doll’s mouth. They left the door open as they departed. One doll waved.
