17.12. The City Hall Built in Reverse
Location: Unused Civic Complex, Central Nara Sector 6
Description:
Nara’s Sector 6 City Hall was constructed from archival blueprints believed to be imperial—until it was realized they had been printed in reverse. Doors opened away from rooms. Corridors looped without connecting. The emperor’s office faces a concrete wall, not the public square. Judai and Juna enter to find clocks that count *back* from decisions, not forward to deadlines. “It was meant to simulate forgotten futures,” a janitor tells them. No meetings were held here. Instead, employees filled out paperwork that negated events from occurring. Juna reads an inverted proclamation: “Let this not be remembered.” The entire structure is an architecture of erasure. Bureaucracy as blanking field. And every empty desk carries an unnamed nameplate.
Keywords:
reversed civic architecture, Nara Sector 6 anomaly, bureaucratic blanking, countdown decision logic, memory-negating office
Very Short Story:
The stairs led upward—then downward again. Judai lost count of the turns. In a central chamber, dozens of calendars marked yesterday as a holiday. Juna opened a drawer to find declarations written in mirror script. “This one undoes a parade,” she said. They found seating charts for meetings that never happened, assigned to people who never arrived. And yet the janitor watered plants, emptied bins. “We maintain the absence,” he said, smiling. Juna stared at her reflection in a black glass wall and realized: the city had planned for non-existence. And somehow, it had been implemented.
