Location: Office 4R, Second Archive Tower, Nara
Description:
In a backroom of Nara’s Second Archive Tower, an entire office still runs according to a duplicated imperial calendar—one day behind the official record. Employees wear outdated badges and send memos referencing events that haven't occurred. Judai interviews a clerk who insists tomorrow’s rain has already been filed. Juna finds a cabinet labeled “August 32.” The room’s fluorescent lights buzz slightly out of sync. A wall clock ticks forward, then repeats. This is not error—it is protocol. The duplicate calendar was established as a buffer, to allow time for reconsideration. “All sovereigns need a shadow,” one plaque reads. “This is the one that moves slower.”

Very Short Story:
The air was thick with pending decisions. A woman in uniform handed Juna a form labeled *Tomorrow’s Corrections*. “You’ll want to revise these today,” she said. Judai looked at the calendar: the same date as yesterday. “We’re on the sovereign lag,” the woman explained. “So the empire has time to regret.” Each drawer held minutes from events just about to happen. Juna opened one labeled “Post-Ceremony Silence.” It was blank. “We haven’t heard it yet,” she whispered. The lights flickered once. Then again. And then didn’t stop. They left without closing the door, which closed itself—exactly one minute later.
