17.26. Echo Chamber for Absent Ceremonies
(Location: Vestibule E, Nara Civic Conservatory)
Beyond the orchestra rehearsal room is a sealed vestibule marked with ceremonial drapery. Inside, an array of podiums, screens, and empty chairs face a blank wall. An inscription reads: ‘FOR FUTURE INAUGURATIONS’. No event has ever been scheduled here. The space was built to simulate anticipation—audio feedback loops hum faintly, mimicking applause, footfalls, and breath. Juna activates an overhead switch. A spotlight flickers, then steady—illuminating nothing. Judai reads an archived memo: 'Reserve for Reclaiming Days'. No instructions, just repetition. They listen, and a phantom speech begins, spoken by a voice none of them recognize.
Keywords: ceremonial space, phantom speeches, simulated applause, future memory, uninhabited leadership
Very Short Story:
Juna stands at the podium and says nothing. The room responds with imaginary applause. Judai adjusts an unseen microphone, and hears a eulogy from 1911 in reverse. The echoes don’t belong to them—they belong to someone who was meant to lead. In the silence, a bell rings once, and the room resets.
