19.8. Clockless District
Location: Former Commercial Center, Urakami
Description:
The Urakami commercial corridor, reconstructed post-1945, exists now as a no-time zone. Clocks hung in windows tick forward, then snap back. Wristwatches stop on approach. Judai observes shadows that curve at wrong angles. Juna opens a shop drawer and finds only calendar pages from the same day. “This place is not broken,” she says. “It is refusing.” Every alley opens into a slightly shifted version of the main street—neon signs spelled backward, shopkeepers blinking out mid-gesture. Time cannot circulate here. Rumor holds a 16mm camera buried under the plaza surface, still filming, always stuck on frame one. They exit through a dry cleaner and enter a flower shop they already visited. The sun sets twice.

Very Short Story:
They spend hours in the Clockless District—yet nothing ages. Judai’s tea remains warm. Juna finds a receipt in her pocket from a shop they haven’t entered yet. Bells chime, but never stop. She sketches the street’s layout only to discover she’s drawn it as a spiral. When Judai drops a coin, it spins in place for fifteen minutes. They see the same man walking a dog three times, each with a different leash color. The sun flickers, stutters, then resets. Juna whispers, “Time is not passing. It’s pantomiming.” They leave the district and check their watches: both stopped the moment they entered, hands pointing at each other like a mirror.
