2.14. Subtitles for the Dead
(Location: Cemetery Gatehouse 9, Tokyo West District)
Description:
Under a gatehouse built during the Occupation era, Judai and Juna find an exhibit of uncaptioned footage. The walls are blank. Visitors wear glasses that show only subtitles — no images. The subtitles scroll slowly: “He didn’t know he had died.” Then: “She asked again, but there was no answer.” The gatekeeper explains the exhibit displays ghost interviews — filmed with empty chairs. “The dead speak in pause,” he says. Juna reads the lines aloud as if dubbing. Judai takes off his glasses. Without them, only silence and shadow remain. Some subtitles appear in Hebrew, others in old Mongolian script. None offer explanations. The exhibit ends with a question: “Do you wish to be subtitled?”
Keywords:

Very Short Story:
Juna whispered the subtitles as they passed. “He thinks he is still here.” “She walks to the phone, forgetting it’s not real.” Judai paused. He recognized a line — something his brother once said. “Are these fragments or full stories?” he asked. The gatekeeper shook his head. “Depends how much silence you can read.” At the end, a mirror displayed a final line: “You are being translated now.”
