20.17. Rehearsals in the Ash Studio

Location: Former Training Floor B, Atomic Theater Division, Kyoto
Description:
This space once trained performers in protective suits to reenact atomic moments. The “Ash Studio,” as it came to be called, was sealed after a sequence of unexplained duplications—actors speaking lines before hearing them, scripts rewritten in real-time. Judai and Juna enter through a rusted side door, where chalk outlines of bodies still mark blocking positions. Scattered across the floor are hundreds of shredded scripts, each missing the same page. A loudspeaker on the back wall plays only the words “again, from the detonation,” on repeat. When Juna tries to exit, she finds herself back at the entry point, as if the scene were looping. Judai records the positions of the outlines. None match human dimensions.

Keywords:
atomic theater, looping rehearsal, missing script page, ghost choreography, actor duplication

Very Short Story:
Juna traced the outlines on the floor with her fingers. “They moved differently,” she said. Judai flipped through a half-burned script, page 47 missing from all copies. A voice echoed again: “From the detonation.” Neither knew what had been rehearsed, but both felt they’d already seen it. Juna stepped toward the exit and emerged at the opposite side of the room. Judai followed and heard applause. No one was there. In her book, a new scene had appeared, handwritten in red ink. It ended with a stage direction: “Leave before remembering.” They didn’t. They stayed. The lights dimmed.
