20.25. The Studio That Dreamed of Itself
Location: Subterranean Level, Abandoned Soundstage 4, Manchu Edison Shinkyo
Description:
Deep beneath Soundstage 4 is a level that never appeared on architectural plans. Yet it exists: a full-scale replica of the soundstage above, rendered in slightly distorted proportion. Sets repeat but are mirrored; lighting rigs face into black walls. The camera tracks are laid in loops. “It’s a dream of the studio,” Juna remarks. Here, sound does not record. It’s absorbed. Judai writes down ambient phrases he never heard aloud. On a broken monitor, they watch themselves walk through the space seconds before they do. Nothing is being filmed. But the space believes it is in production. “Scene,” says a voice neither of them recognizes. A clapperboard falls. The lights dim.
Keywords:
studio double, mirrored sets, unrecorded sound, spatial loop, dreaming cinema
Very Short Story:
They circled the replica set for twenty minutes before realizing it was tracking them. Each step echoed a second before they took it. Juna paused before a hanging microphone. It glowed faintly, pulsing with thought. Judai wrote: “Sound without speaker.” The walls shimmered. They passed a director’s chair with no nameplate. The monitor now showed them exiting, even though they hadn’t moved. “This isn’t playback,” said Juna. “It’s prediction.” A light cue blinked above a false ceiling. Then a voice, faint and slow: “Take two.” But no scene had yet occurred. They turned. The lights blinked again. They had already left.
