21.16. Juna Enters the Waiting Room of Not Yet
Location: Platform Extension Behind the Arch
Description:
Beyond the fractured arch of Urakami Central Station lies a platform no one built. Concrete panels float an inch above the earth, unsupported. This is the Waiting Room of Not Yet—a vestibule where travelers hold tickets for trains that haven't been scheduled. No timetable, no signage. Just a bench carved from bombed temple stone and a screen displaying only ellipses. Juna walks the full length of it. Footsteps echo differently here, as if bouncing off unrealized moments. The walls are not real, but people have left coats behind. “We are the early arrivals,” she mutters. A book rests at the edge, open to a page with no words. Wind turns it anyway. Judai watches from the other side, unable to join. Only those who wait alone may enter.
Keywords:
unfinished platform, temporal vestibule, pre-departure space, temple stone bench, unreadable schedule
Very Short Story:
Juna sat down beside the book. It didn’t belong to her, but she felt like she’d written it. Each page contained the silence before words begin. Her breath misted in the air despite no cold. A family passed behind her, shadows with no features. She didn’t hear a train, but her bones swayed like one had passed. “Not yet,” the screen flickered. She looked back at the entrance—sealed now. Judai stood beyond, notebook closed, arms folded. She mouthed: “Later.” He shook his head, not in refusal, but in understanding. The bench grew warm. The wind paused. Something arrived—not a train, but an agreement.
