21.25. Letter in the Ballast

Location: Gravelbed of Forgotten Track 3
Description:
Buried beneath the ballast of Track 3 lies a sealed letter addressed in two hands. The gravelbed has not hosted a train in decades. But someone—perhaps two people—has maintained the rocks in perfect alignment. Judai and Juna find the envelope beneath a prism-shaped stone. Opening it reveals a short film script: one character leaves, the other waits. There’s a timestamp: “Projected 1944, Rewritten 2023.” The letter is unsigned but references lines from poems they’ve both underlined before. “Did we write this?” Juna wonders. The gravel shifts, forming an arrow that points nowhere. She replaces the letter, now slightly damp. “We weren’t meant to read it—just to return it.”

Keywords:
dual handwriting, buried script, railway correspondence, phantom maintenance, directional null

Very Short Story:
They read it twice. Once silently, once aloud. The words echoed differently each time. “This was ours,” Judai said. “Or will be.” The script ended with a line: “I’ll wait beside the stone.” Juna looked around. “Which one?” The ballast clicked underfoot, as if settling. She replaced the envelope and stood. “Come on,” she said. “We’ll find the ending together.” The gravel shimmered, like memory being arranged. No train arrived—but they kept walking anyway.
