22.21. The White Table, Broken Again

Location: Neutral Pavilion, Treaty Room D, Harbin
Description:
The table is always repainted white before the next ceremony. Beneath the paint: scratches, blood flecks, cigarette burns, and initials of the dozens who “concluded peace.” Juna notes the wood buckling from years of humid summers and staged conflict resolution. The treaty room is mirrorless—no one must see themselves while agreeing. Chairs are mismatched. One is always missing. A scribe waits to transcribe a pact whose text never arrives. Judai finds ink-stained gloves from a previous signatory who couldn’t stop trembling. “They never changed the language,” Juna says, reading a clause from 1933. “Only the names.” The new version omits dates. It merely begins: “Here, we accept…” The rest is blank. A treaty with infinite authors. All of them temporary.

Keywords:
painted-over treaty table, recurring signature, treaty without time, archival repetition, scribe in waiting

Very Short Story:
The chairs were rearranged again—symbolically, not practically. Juna was offered the seat with the broken leg. She declined. Judai stood. A disembodied voice read from a document that wasn’t on the table. “In mutual recognition,” it said, though only one flag stood in the room. They were expected to nod. They did. A camera clicked, capturing nothing but posture. The table creaked under its latest silence. They signed their names to the air. No one objected. History moved forward through the illusion of agreement.
