22.7. Armory of Empty Cases
Location: Shenyang Subterranean Depot
Description:
Beneath Shenyang’s northern ridge lies a vault of gun cases—hundreds, carefully labeled, all empty. Each bears the seal of an army no longer listed in public record. The depot is chilled, its lights dim and blinking. Juna opens one case: inside, only a note—“This is the absence required for peace.” Judai locates a map labeled *Deployment of Emptiness*. Arrows indicate movements made by forces without weapons. The walls are lined with photographs of soldiers unarmed, raising their hands before disappearing behind smoke. This is where the war’s inverse was staged—a campaign of subtraction. The depot is not forgotten. It is rehearsed as non-memory. Here, disarmament isn’t an event. It’s a climate.
Keywords:
disarmed vault, ghost army, subtraction campaign, depot of nothing, weaponless war
Very Short Story:
They moved silently among the cases. Judai read off serial numbers—each one erased itself as he spoke it. Juna photographed every fourth case. Later, her film showed only shadows. “Peace requires inventory,” said a voice in the dark. They turned—no one was there. A projector switched on: it showed soldiers hugging instead of fighting, saluting an absent commander. One soldier handed another an invisible rifle. “It’s safe now,” he mouthed. The film cut. The cases closed again.
