Location: Point Undefined, Arc Between Nagasaki and Kyoto
Description:
Between Nagasaki and Kyoto—at no marked place—the sky opens. It happens during a pause in train motion, not a scheduled stop. The cabin dims. Light rushes inward from a non-source: neither sun nor moon. Windows reveal sky as filmstrip, each frame a different memory not lived. Judai sees their arrival in a city he’s never known. Juna sees a departure that hasn’t occurred. Their reflections are missing. The passengers freeze mid-sentence. One child points upward, then vanishes. The train resumes. Sky closes like a wound. No one speaks. The conductor takes a headcount—two extra noted, unclaimed. Juna writes: “There are scenes between stations.”
Keywords:
sky aperture, filmstrip sky, missing reflection, scene-between-scenes, temporal pause
Very Short Story:
They sat quietly as the air thickened. The window flared, then slowed to a flicker. “I saw you leave,” Juna whispered. Judai said, “I saw you arrive.” Neither had moved. They touched hands. A jolt. Then, motion again. The sky sealed behind them, like a reel retracting. “We weren’t supposed to see that,” she said. He nodded. But they had.
