25.16. The Intersection That No One Crosses
Location: Route 6 & Old Station Road, Odaka
Description:
There’s a four-way intersection in Odaka where traffic lights still work, but no one ever drives through. The lights change on time—green, yellow, red—but each signal is answered by stillness. Cars appear on the horizon, slow down, stop… and turn away. Judai and Juna arrive at noon, watching the signals cycle without purpose. Juna steps into the middle, expecting horns, but hears only birds. Judai records three minutes of perfect operation: no malfunction, no human reaction. Rumors suggest the intersection was the centerpoint of simultaneous evacuations from four directions, each halted before arrival. Now, the crossroad is sacred—a machine doing its duty for no one. The lights remain synchronized. The emptiness obeys.
Keywords:
abandoned traffic, synchronized silence, sacred crossroad, Odaka signal void, directional refusal
Very Short Story:
They waited. The signal turned green. No car came. Juna crossed deliberately, holding her book high like a flag. Judai noted the exact interval—forty-seven seconds per cycle, never interrupted. An old woman once called it “the obedience square,” where machines still hope for humans. But no one arrives. “This place remembers something terrible,” Juna said. “Or refuses to.” The lights changed again, the same way they always do. As if timing could preserve what movement forgot.
