25.22. The Building That Believes It’s Still a School
Location: West Odaka, Former Middle School 3
Description:
Its gates swing open at 7:30 a.m. Its bell rings hourly. The flag is raised and lowered—by no one. But the building persists in its routine. Inside, desks are aligned, chalkboards clean. Sometimes, books appear on the shelves that weren’t there the day before. Judai photographs a lesson plan written in invisible ink—revealed only by breath. Juna discovers a janitor’s closet filled with unopened lunches. The school dreams itself forward, one schedule at a time. Alumni have reported receiving report cards decades after graduation. No staff. No students. Just the pulse of imagined purpose. The building is convinced it still matters—and perhaps it does.
Keywords:

Very Short Story:
They arrived as the bell rang for second period. No children, but chairs creaked slightly. A chalk fragment hovered at the edge of a sentence: “Tomorrow is—” and nothing more. Judai touched a locker. Warm. Inside: a scarf still damp from rain. Juna opened a book and found her own name in the margins. “Attendance,” she said softly. “The school remembers us.” They sat in the teachers’ lounge until the lights flickered off. Somewhere, a quiz was being graded.
