26.15. The Garden That Only Grows Objects
Location: Odaka Peripheral Quadrant, Lot 12
Description:
This garden yields no plants—only artifacts. Each week, caretakers arrive to find new items protruding from the soil: a wristwatch paused at 3:11, a child’s shoe with no match, a faded photo of a boat on fire. Juna bends down and unearths a film strip labeled “Test Sequence 0.” Judai finds a key that matches no known door. The garden is not maintained—it is curated. Soil samples show high radiation, but each object remains clean. People have reported digging up items they buried as children—though they’ve never lived in Odaka. A sign reads: “Nothing you plant will grow. Everything else will.” It is less a place of growth, more a museum of memory’s refuse. And it expands after rain.

Very Short Story:
She dug gently, brushing back the dirt. A compass. “It belonged to my brother,” Juna whispered. “But I never had a brother.” Judai unearthed a VHS tape. It had their names on the label. They’d never seen it before. “This place grows loss,” he said. “Not grief—just what’s left behind.” They sat among the items, surrounded by untold stories. The garden rustled slightly, as if breathing. Then another object surfaced: a notebook, already opened.
