4.12. Allegiance Clock of the Missing Shift
(Location: Municipal Time-Command Node, Ward 6B)
Description:
The Allegiance Clock governs hours not on any civil schedule. Located in a sealed chamber within Ward 6B’s former Ministry of Obedience, it is rumored to tick only during wars that have been denied. Judai and Juna enter during twilight and see the long hand twitch once. A logbook beside the mechanism lists past alignments: *Shift 37: The Hour of Voluntary Surveillance; Shift 52: The Hour of Collective Reconsideration.* The numbers don't match the day. Or the year. The room’s lighting changes subtly with each click. “It’s synchronizing us,” Juna says, “but not to time—to belief.” On the wall, a faded sign reads: *TO BE LOYAL, BE TIMELY.* Behind the glass, the second hand finally moves—backward, then forward again.

Very Short Story:
They watched the clock for an hour that didn’t exist. Judai counted thirty-nine movements of the second hand, none evenly spaced. Juna recorded the tone emitted each time it passed the twelve: a high-pitched chime, like ceremonial silence. The logbook began updating itself. She noted a new shift: *Shift 79: Hour of Remembering Before Action.* The minute hand pulsed twice, and they both felt slightly older. “This isn’t keeping time,” Judai said. “It’s keeping faith.” They left the chamber, unsure how long they had stayed. Outside, their watches were broken. Or changed. Or caught up in a clock that no longer obeyed war’s rhythm.
