4.16. The Army of Incomplete Oaths

(Location: Hall of Broken Swearing-In, Garrison Delta)

Description:
A corridor of abandoned induction stations still smells faintly of ink and cordite. On each podium sits a book of vows—every one left open, sentences half-formed. Judai picks up a quill, but it scratches only ellipses. Juna flips through a ledger: names, all in pale graphite, fading with each page. Loudspeakers hum gently with the phrase: *I solemnly… I solemnly…* but never finish. The uniforms on racks are stitched with question marks. On the far wall, an oath is etched in marble but missing every third word. “They wanted loyalty,” Juna says, “but never dared define its terms.” The space between commitment and silence is palpable. They walk slowly, respectful of promises too fragile to finalize. These soldiers were drafted into hesitation.

Keywords:
##unfinished loyalty
##drafted doubt
##vows in suspension
##military hesitation
##oaths without object

Very Short Story:
Juna placed her palm over a scanner. Nothing happened—only a flicker of recognition that vanished too fast to grasp. Judai opened a drawer and found rows of medals labeled: *For Intent.* A nearby screen replayed footage of recruits raising their right hands, lips moving, then freezing. “They were made to swear to the possibility of war,” Juna said. “Not its arrival.” One induction booth was filled with fog, as if waiting for someone to finalize history. They spoke their names into the silence and heard nothing back. Then the lights dimmed. In the dark, it felt like someone had finally finished the sentence.
