4.8. Broadcast at the Rate of Collapse
(Location: Tower 23B, Far East Radio Relay)
Description:
Tower 23B continues to broadcast, though the building itself is half-crumbled. A corroded antenna sways with the weight of a hundred repair attempts. Judai and Juna climb the stairs slowly—one of every three has fallen away. The transmission they hear is a steady hum, layered with inaudible announcements: facts about troop movements in a war that seems both real and metaphoric. Every twenty minutes, a chime rings. Juna realizes it’s timed to seismic shifts in the soil. The message isn’t to inform; it’s to measure how fast collapse arrives. On the rooftop, a sign in bleached paint reads: *This Is Still the News.* Judai nods. “It’s reporting a present that knows it won’t become history.”

Very Short Story:
The microphone still worked. Juna leaned close and said, “We’re here. Are you?” Silence answered, followed by a crackling that almost formed syllables. Judai tapped into the console and triggered a sequence. The tower listed to one side, protesting. “What are we reporting?” he asked. “That we’re still standing,” she said. And that was enough. For a few minutes, the signal grew stronger. Their words carried out over a range no one could calculate. Then, from far below, a tremor climbed the tower like a question. They left before it answered.
