5.23. The Subcommittee on Memory Management
(Location: Records Bunker 19A, Manchurian Cognitive Affairs Division)
Description:
Behind three locked doors lies a meeting room with red velvet chairs facing a blank screen. Files on the table list directives like *Reduce Monumental Recall*, *Redistribute Sacrifice*, and *Condense Regret by Sector.* One document reads: *Memories to be retained: ceremonial, instructional, unverifiable.* Juna flips open a binder labeled *Amnesia Zones.* Judai finds a diagram: a national memory grid with blinking dots of “acceptable grief.” The screen flickers. A man appears, unblinking, and states: *You remember too much.* The recording loops. At the back of the room, a shredder hums gently beside a sign: *Forget Responsibly.* Outside, the hallway walls list numbers but no names.
Keywords:
##regulated forgetting
##grief zoning
##selective recall policies
##cognitive rationing
##authorized memory loss
Very Short Story:
Judai typed his mother’s name into a terminal. It returned: *Not Retained.* Juna tried hers—it said: *Emotionally Neutral: Acceptable.* They looked at each other, neither sure what that meant. A form asked them to prioritize: Victory, Regret, Unity, or Silence. They both chose “Silence.” A door opened. Inside: shelves of labeled jars—*Laughter 1939,* *Fear 1942,* *Hope (Classified).* “They turned memory into a commodity,” Juna said. Judai touched a jar labeled *You.* It was empty.
