7.11. Juna Rides the Dome Boat Alone
(Location: Hiroshima Dome Boat, Midbay Traverse)
Description:
One morning, Judai could not board. The Hiroshima Dome Boat, though docked, recognized only Juna’s presence. As she stepped onto the gangway, the vessel vibrated lightly, then detached itself, gliding across the reservoir without engine or oar. Juna sat in the central chair—once used for imperial observations—and watched the shoreline vanish into mirrored fog. Inside the cabin, screens flickered to life, displaying reel fragments: atomic blossoms reversing into seeds, laughter without faces, maps of Japan dissolving into concentric rings. On the forward display: a countdown written in reversed kanji. The boat spun once in place, aligning with a beam of light from JOAC’s dome. Juna raised her book. The machine responded. It translated nothing. But it heard her.

Very Short Story:
The boat drifted into its own weather. Juna felt nothing beneath her—no current, no thrust. It was as if she sat inside a suspended sentence. On one screen, her younger face blinked, stilled, then vanished. Another screen displayed an old newspaper headline that never printed: “Boop Visits Shinkyo.” At midpoint, the boat paused. A beam from the JOAC dome pulsed three times, then split into seven shadows. Juna whispered, and the dome replied with silence—its own form of agreement. She marked a note in her book: “Today, I was remembered.” Then the boat turned, returned, and docked itself.
