7.7. Shōwa’s Apparent Diameter
(Location: Southern Viewing Platform, Emperor Hirohito Tomb Corridor)
Description:
The walkway along the tomb corridor was designed to measure the apparent size of the Shōwa period. Not in years, but in curvature. Visitors traverse a spiraling ramp that subtly contracts and expands based on political density—a calculation derived from declassified lunar observation reports and discarded public mourning rituals. Judai walked clockwise; Juna walked counterclockwise. Midway, their reflections crossed but their paths never did. On the southern platform, a coin-operated viewer magnifies the crown worn during Hirohito’s radio broadcast, revealing instead a sequence of botanical cycles—the rise and fall of the imperial chrysanthemum. “The war lasted longer in this spiral,” said Juna. She knelt to record the floral equations etched into the cement. Above them, a weather balloon floated but never cast a shadow.

Very Short Story:
Judai’s steps slowed as the ramp narrowed. He counted breaths, recording them as units of national echo. Juna stopped near a notch in the rail—a place where a wind chime once rang only during eclipses. A voice whispered from the viewing scope: “Look closer.” Inside the lens, petals folded into radio waves. She pulled back. A faint click behind them suggested time passing. “We aren’t going in circles,” Judai said. “We’re orbiting an idea.” They finished the walk side by side, not intersecting but resonant.
