9.19. Frog Recorder’s Mirror
(Location: Mobile Archive Unit, East of Takasaki Wind Tunnel)
Description:
The Recorder’s Mirror was not literal—it was a pond inside a sealed mobile archive unit, preserved in amber glass. At its center floated a frog wearing a tiny headset. Juna adjusted the dials. The pond shimmered and replayed moments they’d just lived: walking toward the unit, speaking to each other, crouching at the edge. But the dialogue was slightly off—wrong inflections, wrong words. Judai noted that the frog had a pulse. “It’s not reflecting us,” he said. “It’s suggesting a version of us.” They turned off the viewer. The frog looked directly at them and croaked: once. Then again.

Very Short Story:
Judai replayed the recording in reverse. The frog remained still, but the pond changed: instead of scenes from today, it showed them arriving yesterday. Then last week. Then not at all. “It’s not linear,” Juna whispered. “It’s loyalty, not chronology.” They left the archive. Behind them, the frog adjusted its headset. The unit powered down. Or up. They couldn’t be sure.
