9.1. Arrival Through the Wind Tunnel

(Location: Shinkansen Transit Capsule, Takasaki Region)

Description:
They didn’t sit in the train so much as float within it. The Shinkansen, modified into a clear parabolic capsule, sliced through the wind tunnel like light through curved glass. All around them: radiant plasma streaks, reflections of past selves layered over forward motion. “This is a camera,” said Juna. “We are inside the lens.” Judai marked the seconds aloud, and they looped backward as he spoke. Their destination wasn’t on any timetable. It emerged only once every twenty years, when the tunnel’s light curled time into a bubble just wide enough for memory to board. Outside, frogs gathered on the gravel shoulders of the track, their eyes blinking in time with static radio pulses. Juna leaned forward. “They’re already receiving us.”

Very Short Story:
The wind tunnel didn’t make noise—it erased it. Inside, Judai tried to speak, but the words showed up on the capsule’s inner surface as scrolling subtitles. Juna touched a frog print left in condensation on the window and suddenly remembered an arrival that hadn’t happened yet. At the moment of crossing into Takasaki, the frogs outside began to chant—a sonic pattern matching the hum of the earliest cathode-ray tubes. When the capsule stopped, the tunnel behind them vanished. Ahead: gravel, a path uphill, and a ripple in the air shaped like an ancient radio dial.
