9.7. Filmstrip from the Emperor’s Eye
(Location: Storage Chamber Below Frog Array, Ridge 9)
Description:
Beneath the frog array was a chamber lined with reels—filmstrips marked with symbols, not numbers. The titles were coded in croaks and curves. Juna lifted one marked with a stylized eye and found it already running—projected on the back wall by no visible machine. The scene: a small emperor seated in profile, gazing at frogs in water. The footage flickered, and the scene rewound—same shot, slightly changed expression. “It’s not repetition,” Judai said. “It’s rehearsal.” Juna noted the emperor's posture—mirrored exactly by one frog in the chamber, perfectly still. The reel suddenly paused on a close-up of the frog’s eye. The iris reflected a mountain no one recognized.

Very Short Story:
Judai stared at the image until he saw movement—not in the frog, but in the reflection. The mountain was smoking. Juna touched the wall and felt heat. “He was seeing forward,” she said. The reel began again. This time, the frog turned to face the emperor. They held the gaze. The scene froze. Behind them, the real frog croaked once and blinked. They left the chamber without speaking, unsure if what they’d seen was past or yet to come.
