26.17. The Camp Where Everyone Was Someone Else
Location: Koriyama Displacement Grid, Sector 3
Very Short Story:
Captain Mori ran the laundry tent and wore medals from no war. Juna remembered him as a child who flew kites in Namie. “Captain?” she asked. “I’m retired,” he smiled. In Sector 3, no one used real names. A girl taught calculus from a children’s book. A former teacher now claimed to be a comedian. Judai sat at a gathering where stories were traded like rice: fluid, sustaining, unprovable. “We’re not lying,” someone said. “We’re rehearsing better lives.” Juna found a tag labeled “DOCTOR” pinned to a tent filled with origami animals. She placed it in her pocket. At night, they heard applause—no stage, just voices affirming each other. Reality bent, but didn’t break. Tomorrow, someone else would be her.
