26.18. The Bridge That No Longer Touches Land

Very Short Story:
They approached the span through weeds, unsure if it would hold them. Judai stepped lightly; Juna ran her fingers along the rusted rail. Below them, speakers crackled—pulses like heartbeats. “It’s listening,” she said. Halfway across, the bridge shifted beneath them—not structurally, but spiritually, like a dream adjusting mid-sleep. “We’re crossing into something that hasn’t happened yet,” Judai muttered. A drone flew overhead and blinked once, recording nothing. They reached the end, but found no earth—just more air. Juna dropped a stone and counted. It never landed. Behind them, the bridge remained, waiting for new land to reattach itself to. They turned back slowly. The bridge did not judge their retreat. It only remembered that they had passed.
