5.5. The Map of Borders That Keep Changing

(Location: Cartography Wing, Shinkyo Civic Museum)

Description:
Pinned to an aging corkboard is a collection of border maps dating from 1932 to yesterday. All are hand-drawn, none match. The docents call it *The Room of Conditional Nations.* Each map is accompanied by an annotation: *Recognized briefly,* *Planned but Not Implemented,* *Retrospectively Invalid.* Judai unfolds a transparent overlay labeled *Future Sovereignty Proposal.* It includes ghost cities and sea routes between erased kingdoms. Juna finds a child’s crayon map posted among them, labeled simply: *Mine.* The guides offer no commentary. “They were not trying to define power,” Juna says, “only to imagine it legible.” In the corner hangs a single compass—spinning slowly on its nail.

Keywords:
##transient sovereignty
##handmade geography
##conditional nationhood
##mapping memory
##imaginary borders

Very Short Story:
Juna drew her own map on tracing paper, following no lines. “Borders are just edits,” she said. Judai stared at one labeled *Reclaimed Twice, Lost Thrice.* A note read: *Still Under Negotiation.* The museum played soft music—an anthem never used. Visitors left pencil markings: favorite names, circled coastlines. One boy kissed a place labeled *Motherland Alpha.* Judai turned the compass—it whirled once and pointed up. Juna smiled. “Then that’s where we’ll go.”
