5.6. The Counterfeit Constitution Ceremony

(Location: Legal Archive Basement, Puppet State Ministry Compound)

Description:
Down two flights of unlit stairs in the old Ministry of Law building lies a concrete room with a podium, a flag, and a table covered in a silk cloth. This was the rehearsal site for the Manchukuo constitution signing—a ceremony restaged dozens of times for press, each time with slight changes. A wax replica of the emperor’s hand still grips the ceremonial pen. Judai flips through copies of the constitution printed in different languages, none identical. Juna holds up a flashcard labeled: *Clause 5 – The Right to Pretend.* A wall display shows photos of dignitaries whose faces were replaced in post-production. “Even legality was an act,” Juna mutters. “Signed beneath the stage, beneath the flag, beneath belief.”

Keywords:
##legal pantomime
##simulated sovereignty
##ceremonial deception
##duplicated documents
##staged legitimacy

Very Short Story:
Judai signed one of the blank constitutions. The ink turned red. “Is this blood or approval?” he asked. Juna found a practice reel—delegates walking in and out, never sitting, never speaking. “They filmed the ceremony but never the document,” she said. A tape recorder played voices declaring loyalty in mismatched accents. The emperor’s wax hand cracked at the wrist. From a vent, a draft carried the smell of burnt paper. “Someone already revoked this,” Juna whispered, folding the constitution into a paper airplane and sending it into the dark.
