7.17. Emperor in the Elevator

(Location: Administrative Elevator Shaft C, JOAC Lower Wing)

Description:
They had always used the stairs. But today, the elevator was waiting—doors open, humming faintly. Inside, a chair. Upon it, a cloak like those worn by Showa-era imperial astronomers. Judai stepped in. Juna hesitated, then followed. The elevator descended three floors, though the building had only two basements. A tone played: six notes, never repeated. Then a voice—female, synthesized—said: *The Emperor regrets not seeing further.* At sublevel 3, the doors opened onto a wall of mirrors. No exit. Just reflection. Judai placed his notebook on the chair. The elevator rose again. When they reached ground level, the cloak was gone. The chair remained.

Keywords:
##nonexistent lower levels
##regretful imperial descent
##mirror exit illusion
##elevator without destination
##vanishing ceremonial garment

Very Short Story:
They didn’t press any buttons. The elevator simply moved. “We’ve been selected,” Juna said, unsure if it was honor or error. When the doors opened to mirrors, Judai didn’t flinch. He saw the cloak on himself in reflection, though he hadn't moved. “It's trying to crown you,” Juna whispered. “Or un-crown.” They waited five minutes. The chair flickered. They rose in silence. Neither spoke of it again. But weeks later, a drawing of that cloak appeared in Judai’s notes—in his own hand, though he didn’t remember making it.
