7.22. Letters to the Observatory that Burned

(Location: Postal Archive Trench, JOAC Periphery)

Description:
At the edge of JOAC’s grounds lies a trench—dug, abandoned, then reused for storage. Postal bags sealed in wax paper, addressed to *Observatory Past*. Some stamped *Return to Sender—Recipient No Longer Accepts Stars.* Juna opened one. Inside: a letter from a boy named Yukio, dated 1946, asking the sky to return his brother. Another letter, unsigned, simply read: *Tell Betty it wasn’t her fault.* Judai crouched beside the trench, brushing away dust to reveal charred insulation—remnants from the observatory’s first fire. “They wrote to be burned,” he said. “But some mail always survives the system.” They left the letters where they found them. Unsent, unread—but acknowledged.

Keywords:
##burned observatory correspondence
##postal trench archive
##unsent letters to sky
##1946 child astronomy plea
##Betty apology document

Very Short Story:
The wax paper had melted slightly, but the ink remained legible. Judai read slowly, his fingers trembling. “They weren’t writing to be answered,” he said. “They just wanted to exist longer than fire.” Juna closed the bag again and replaced it beneath a plastic dome. “This one’s breathing,” she whispered. One letter bore a return address that matched a current dome number—though the dome itself had been dismantled in 1987. They both looked at the sky. It remained quiet. But not indifferent.
